Brian’s Mixtape #17: The Laurel Canyon
Brian’s been around for a while, as much as he likes to keep up with the young ones, he has to admit that’s he’s getting on a bit. So old in fact that he remembers another exciting time for folk music, the 60s and 70s in Laurel Canyon in California. Artists like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, Jackson Browne, Neil Young and many others hung out and collaborated. So Brian’s put together a playlist with some of the music they created.

EP: She Keeps Bees – Revival
She Keeps Bees are a little 2-piece from Brooklyn consisting of Jessica Larrabee and Andy Laplant, but don’t be fooled by their size, the band should really be set for big things. With this EP, Revival, we hear exactly what these guys are about- simple stripped down bluesy genius. And stripped down/ simple bluesy genius just so happens to be my favourite kind of genius. There’s just something about a band that have the power to blow away an audience with a single vocal, a guitar and some drums that gets to me.
FFS interview: Sparrow and the Workshop
‘Sparrow and the Workshop’ describe themselves as a Scottish/welsh/American three-piece based in Glasgow who started ‘banging out tunes’ in January 2008. Listening to them you would think they’ve played this music for centuries, combining ethereal melodies with a gothic /country twang that sounds refreshingly original. Considering the length of time the band have been together they have racked up some great gigs including festivals through summer and supporting Idlewild and British Sea Power. FFS’s Kat Nicholls penned some questions to find out how the crazy ride is going so far and where they’re headed….
