#96 Joni Mitchell – Night in the City

Before Clouds, Blue, or Ladies of the Canyon Joni Mitchell released her David Crosby-produced first album Song to a Seagull. Joni recorded the album in 1967 when she was 24 and released in ’68. It might have been her debut album, but she was no noob, having already embarked on an impressive career as a songwriter. Judy Collins was singing ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘Chelsea Morning’ and Tom Rush had recorded ‘Urge for Going’ and ‘The Circle Game’.

Night in the City is a gorgeous, sweeping, emotive song about a wander through a city at night. This beautiful version was recorded live at the Couriers Folk Club in Leicester in September 1967.
