EP Review: Broadcast 2000 – Building Blocks

Building Blocks is the debut mini-album from classically-trained multi-instrumentalist Joe Steer, who recorded it solo in his north London flat, but has live help from Tom, Kelly and Slightly.

The EP comprises seven tracks, all unified by close vocals harmonies and imaginative use of cello, double bass, guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, banjo and percussion.

Opener ‘Run’ delivers Mumford-esque harmonies, while ‘Get Up And Go’ (recognisable from the EON TV ad) is Glock Rock at its finest and reminiscent of beloved folkster Adem. ‘Everybody and Me’ is an offbeat stand out track, the upbeat guitar and violin combo juxtaposed with lyrics that tell of the bitter end to a relationship.

While embracing vocal harmonies, glock and banjo, Broadcast 2000 has delivered an album which eschews tweeness with bittersweet and thoughtful lyrics and inventive orchestration.
