Premiere | Chance Emerson – A Different Dark

Currently attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Chance Emerson got his start in Asia. Born in Taiwan to a Taiwanese mother and an American father, Emerson grew up in Hong Kong before traveling to the States and pursuing music. He’s since been away from his homeland for around two-thirds of his life. At 19-years-old, that makes for an even more considerable chunk. “My Mandarin is pretty bad now,” he admits.

Emerson self-produced his first album, The Indigo Tapes, recorded in the attic of his high school’s music building. What he had initially thought would only reach a handful of people has since become a streaming behemoth, racking upwards of almost a million collective spins on Spotify alone. His new LP, The Raspberry Men, dropped with aplomb on 6 March and has since been impressing with its grounded folk stylings.

Directed and produced by Lukas Ian Tay, a music video for Emerson’s latest single from off of the album, ‘A Different Dark’, premieres with For Folk’s Sake today. The video features a restless Emerson and company traversing urban and natural landscapes alike. It’s an adventurous cut that showcases a textured message of self-discovery.
