The evolution of Laurie Hulme’s Songs for Walter project from touching songs inspired by his grandfather to a rich and growing soundscape continues with ‘Squaring Circles’ – his seventh free single and the follow-up to April’s Earwigging. Here Laurie contrasts a whimsical folk-pop tune with the more troubling issue of zero-hour contracts and unpaid overtime. “I feel these kinds of practices are becoming normalised,” Laurie said. “It’s like in the 1980s when people were under such pressure to perform they would leave their coats on the back of the chair to seem as though they were still working late into the night.” All of that said, if Laurie’s boss were to watch this video and see what form his productivity takes when he’s locked on the office after hours, there’s a good chance he’d have any overtime docked…
