Premiere | CHUCK – Dogs

Infusing a psychedelic mix of 80s new wave and 90s alternative movements into his singer-songwriter vibe, Charles Griffin Gibson (aka CHUCK) has been putting out music that has been received as altogether eclectic, mind-boggling, and beautiful since 2014. Now, though, we’re seeing his musical ventures come to a stunning end (for now?) following the release of his final record next month, Frankenstein Songs for the Grocery Store.

Preceding the release of Frankenstein Songs is an ode to all of the pups in our lives, the aptly-titled “Dogs”. You can check it out below, followed up by a quote from CHUCK digging into the creative process surrounding the track.

I’ve always fantasized about being really tight at piano, but I’ve never taken a lesson and only know two chords. ‘Dogs’ makes it sound like I know how to play piano, which is one of my favorite things about it. This song is also special because it was recorded in a studio. I won a free day with an engineer in the Converse Rubber Tracks Studio in Williamsburg through an online contest. I used the day mostly as a live drums session, but I also performed two songs, including ‘Dogs’. Then I took the recording home and built it out with MIDI orchestral elements and guitars. Lyrically, the song is about my kinship with dogs. I feel like I used to be one in a past life. At the end of the day, I just want comfort, food and affection. I guess that goes for most people, but I swear I’ve got some special connection with dogs. We can take a walk in the park together and you’ll see for yourself.
Feel free to also check out the music video to ‘New Yorker’, another track from off of Frankenstein Songs for the Grocery Store.
