“Please be merry, when I am buried/In the ground”. Despite recently playing for Kate n’ Wills in his native Canada, FFS favourite Dan Mangan seems a bit glum right now. Moving on from the flimsier topics (robot love and that) expressed in 2009’s Polaris-nominated Nice, Nice, Very Nice, Dan’s taking the opportunity to question bigger things: humanity, war, death. Not quite so nice anymore then.

The difference between the last album and this is immediately apparent on opening track ‘About As Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All’. Gone is the acoustic guitar strum, replaced by a discordant orchestral crescendo which segues into a Viennese waltz. Mangan has moved away from the alt-folk label, working with free-jazz experimentalists to create a more complex, anthemic sound. It can take a few listens to get used to, given the catchy directness of his earlier work, and it’s not an album that can be dipped in and out of easily.

Lyrically, Mangan is as observational as ever, but more oblique. Despite reprimanding himself early in the album for trying to make sense of the world “I should know better by now/There’s only so much to go around” on ‘How Darwinian’, we still get the war lament ‘Post-War Blues’ and the Radiohead-esque ‘Rows of Houses’. There’s no solution here either – closing track ‘Jeopardy’ consists entirely of questions. If you’re feeling a tad melancholic about the state of society right now, rest assured Dan’s right there alongside you.

Considering the bleak sincerity of the lyrical content, Oh Fortune is incongruently jubilant. Mangan’s distinctive husky voice sounds surprisingly untroubled, at times soaring above a glorious, joyful brass section. Despite experimentation with time signatures and instrumentation everything flows smoothly, from the stomping title track through Jonny Greenwood-style guitar twiddling on ‘Leaves, Trees, Forest’, to end on distinctly chirpy two-minute swing jazz trumpet solo.

Definitely not a continuation of Nice, Nice, Very Nice, Mangan has created a warm, rich, epic but slightly disconcerting statement of intent. He’s all grown-up, and he’s not afraid to show it. Excellent stuff.

Words: Nat Roberts

Portraits of Emmy the Great, Dan Mangan, Iron & Wine and Anna Calvi feature in London-based figurative painter Joe Simpson’s exhibition ‘Musician Portraits’ opening next month.

The paintings will be on display from 14th – 30th October at a temporary gallery in the converted library at 16/17 Greek Street, Soho, London W1D 4DR. Entrance is free.

Joe has spent the past year flying all over the world to meet the musicians at their houses, studios and backstage at gigs.

He said: “The paintings have a physicality to them that you don’t get with a photograph. The paint has a specific weight and application and you can see layers and brushmarks in the hair and skin tones of the subjects. I’m really excited to see all the paintings displayed together under one roof for the very first time.

The portraits will be sold after the exhibition, with 25% of the proceeds going to the charity Seeing is Believing.

There’ll be a monthly-or-thereabouts show from now on, with the next one being probably the most Christmassy radio show of all time.

That chap you can hear is my friend Mark Higgins, who as well as being a nice man, knows how to produce a radio show. He has his own show called Bitter Fingers, also on London Fields Radio.

I think I probably said about 25 different things were lovely over the course of the hour, so if that will annoy you, certainly don’t listen to the show here…

What we played…

Pirates’ Gospel by Alela Diane

BIT OF BRIAN: Brian’s Playlist #26 – Down in One

I Drink by Charles Aznavour
This isn’t on Brian’s playlist, because it’s not on Spotify (has anyone else gone off Spotify a bit recently?) but in the words of Bob Dylan it is “a devastating drinking song by the Frank Sinatra of France”. The lyrics are brilliantly cutting.

We Were Wasted by the Leisure Society
If you didn’t listen to the words of this pretty song, you’d never guess it was about getting home drunk after a night out. According to frontman Nick Hemming, The Leisure Society are in the final stages of recording their second album. I cannot WAIT to hear it.

Feet of Courage by Nancy Elizabeth

Robots by Dan Mangan
FFS-er Stephen Thomas interviewed Dan Mangan after his Union Chapel gig back in October. Read it here.

Sidepain by Sea of Bees
Sea of Bees is the marvellous Jules Baenziger from Sacramento, California. She records with producer and very nice man John Baccigaluppi. There’s an interview Anika Mottershaw and I did with the pair of them coming soon on FFS. Jules will be back in the UK in January.
INFLUENCES: Neutral Milk Hotel and Laura Marling

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel

Made By Maid by Laura Marling
Laura Marling’s old MySpace cited NMH as one of her influences. I see that as a good excuse to play both Laura Marling AND Neutral Milk hotel and call it a feature.

Here we have a little sneak preview of our forthcoming charity Christmas album For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas. Emily & the Woods recorded a gorgeous version of this carol for the album – and if those harmonies don’t make you swoon you are surely dead inside.

<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } –>

There are few venues in London that can compare to the unique nature of the Union Chapel. It stands tall, looming magnificently tonight over the heads of Dan Mangan and the crowd before him. “It’s so nice,” he jokes, “after all those expansive, beautiful venues with natural acoustics to be back playing in a dank, dingy bar like this.” He’ll later claim to FFS that the choice of venue is serendipitous, as he “will only play venues with stained glass windows.” This is, it turns out, rather typical of Dan Mangan – he is not only a great deal more care-free and down to earth than most other musicians, but he is terribly funny as well.

It’s an approach that has worked well for Mangan on numerous occasions. When it came to recording his first album he was unable to gather the money necessary for the enterprise and so, in a moment of startling logic, decided to simply go to the bank. “My dad told me that if I was going to try and get a loan,” Dan says, “I would have to treat it like an actual business, and go in with some sort of thing to show them, to show I was serious.”

And that’s precisely what he did. Dan Mangan, aspiring musician short on money, walked into Van City Credit Union with a business plan scribbled down on a side of paper and then, not long after, walked out of Van City Credit Union with a loan that would serve as the funding for his debut album, Postcards and Daydreaming. The album was picked by a small indie label but didn’t garner much attention beyond his hometown of Vancouver. And so Mangan found himself once again in Van City Credit Union trying for another loan to fund what would become his second album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice.

It’s this effort that caught the imagination of Canada, and soon the wider North Americas, getting Mangan radioplay and a coveted nomination for the Polaris – the Canadian equivalent of the Mercury. Nominated against albums by Broken Social Scene, Caribou and The Besnard Lakes and beating The New Pornographers from the starting blocks of the original longlist, FFS asks how it felt to be in such good company with an album he’d funded with a bank loan. Mangan is typically down to earth about it. “I think, it was more just the honour of being nominated at all, that was good enough. I don’t want to seem like I’m putting down the prize, but it’s one of those things where being nominated is almost enough itself.”

The record, Nice, Nice, Very Nice has a title that at once describes the music present and underplays the intelligence and wit inherent in Mangan’s writing. The title itself is taken from a poem featured in the 1963 Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat’s Cradle. It’s the work of an author Mangan fully relates to. “Reading his writing is like hearing my ideas voiced far more articulately than I could ever hope.”

It’s clear that Dan Mangan spends a lot of time thinking about what he’s trying to say, and how he’s saying it and though he may lack the articulation of Vonnegut he remains more than capable of talking about the big ideas under the pretences of songwriting. “I write less about love, I think, than others do because I don’t feel I have anything meaningful to say about it that hasn’t been said before. I can’t write about devotion, or romantic love.”

The closest he comes to a song about love is his track ‘The Indie Queens Are Waiting’ which, he says, is “about prodding and annoying my girlfriend just to try and get a reaction and see that she’s still paying attention”. He smiles wryly and it’s easy to see that he’s not only telling the truth, but he knows that it’s something he’s not alone in doing.

He has also written a song called ‘Robots’, which closed tonight’s set with the crowd, deep beneath the Union Chapel’s vaulted dome, singing in unison ‘Robots need love too/They want to be loved by you’. As the crowd is drawn into the technological chant Mangan leaps from the stage, running about the pews of the chapel coaxing his crowd into joining him, bouncing up onto the seats and screaming at the top of his voice semi-serious chants of encouragement. “This is beautiful!” he shouts, voice hoarse with enthusiasm, “I can’t hear you!”

Later in the evening Mangan tells FFS that he believes the content of music and the contrast between the music and the lyrics shouldn’t matter, as long as it’s all honest. And he’s right, too. Jumping from pew to pew, struggling to finish his cheers without a laugh slipping out, and with a grin across his face so grand it might well have been the inspiration behind the huge curved architecture of the venue, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Dan Mangan doesn’t mean every single word he’s singing.

Two of FFS’s writers Jonathan Wilson and Robbie Hayward present Super Strings Theory, a radio show on UCL’s student radio station Rare FM. The pair have brill taste in music and their blog is well worth a look.

As well as the radio shows (which you can listen to live on the website, Saturdays 2pm-4pm) the lads organise sessions and have had Dan Mangan, Hey Rosetta! and Gideon Conn gracing the Rare FM camera lenses so far.

Here’s Dan Mangan (FFS’s current voice crush) performing Tina’s Glorious Comeback from his album Nice Nice Very Nice (read our review).
