Premiere | Kathryn Williams’ new single ‘Mirrors’

FFS is delighted to bring you the video premiere for Kathryn Williams new single ‘Mirrors’.

Due for released on 8th July, ‘Mirrors’ is the first single from Kathryn’s Sylvia Plath-inspired album Hypoxia. The album is based on Plath’s novel The Bell Jar.

Kathryn said: “The song came from the scene where Esther goes into a lift and sees her reflection but doesn’t recognise it. This is the first moment of dread I felt as a reader. Mirrors are a reoccurring theme in the book – I love the idea of mirrors as a window to nowhere.”

“The video for ‘Mirrors’ has been made the absolutely amazing Lesley-Anne Rose. I was moved to tears when I first watched it. The way she has worked the song into the story and imagery, I find really touching. The lightness of touch and the mirror shadow girl adjusting her hair is just so pleasing. Leslie made all the figures and the sets as well as spending an awful long time in a dark room moving things centimetre by centimetre. The result is a spooky, wonderful match to the song, I hope you love it as much as me.”

The Hypoxia project came about when Durham Book Festival asked Kathryn to write music celebrating the anniversary of the Bell Jar’s Publication and commemorating 50 years since Plath’s death. After performing 5 original songs in Durham last year, she decided to continue to the project with Ed Harcourt, who produced and engineered the album. Hypoxia is released on 15th June.
