It’s Christmas 2013 | Worry Dolls on coming home for Christmas

Worry Dolls – the duo formed by former solo artists Rosie Jones and Zoe Nicol – are London gig circuit favourites. They wrote Coming Home for For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas 2013. Rosie answered our festive questions…

Can you tell us what inspired your choice/the song for the record?

Our song is called Coming Home, and it’s about the feelings you have approaching Christmas. About coming to the end of yet another year and the regrets you have; you should have seen your old friends more; you should have written to your family and called them more. For us, Christmas is about making up that lost time and spending it with the people you love the most, and we wanted to capture that.

What makes good Christmas music?

Sleigh bells, glockenspiel, trumpet, marching drums… lots of reverb…

What’s your favourite christmas song?

I don’t think we could choose. When it comes to contemporary christmas music, We love everything by She & Him, Sufjan Stevens and the Hanson christmas album, of course. I can’t speak for Zoe but I think my favourite christmas songs are the carols. O Come All Ye Faithful, In the Bleak Midwinter, you know, the classics! I’m really not so keen on the commercial stuff, like Wizzard and Slade. We never played that stuff at home when I was a kid, so it has no nostalgic value for me at all.

What’s your favourite Christmas film?

The Snowman always makes me cry. And Elf. Anything with Zooey Deschanel is a win for me.

What are your Christmas traditions?

Just getting royally drunk with close family and forcing them to play board games with me. It’s great.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given?

Last year I painted my mum a picture and she cried, so I guess it did the trick.

What would you like for Christmas this year?

I’m sure my family will get me amazing presents, but mainly I just want to go home and see everyone and have lots of snuggles with my cat!!

What do you think the meaning of Christmas is?

I think we summed it up in our song. Making up lost time with the people you love.

What’s your top Christmas tip?

Get drunk on christmas eve, then on christmas day you can top up on a glass of bubbly in the morning – instantly drunk!
